Afghan Space Program

A New Zealander with the remarkable name of Grant Motley (isn't that cool?) showed up the other day wearing this awesome patch on his uniform.

As you can see in the zoomed-in photo below, it's from the Afghan Space Program.

Of course, there is no such thing... but it's a pretty cool patch. I totally want to get one. And then I need a uniform that has a spot for patches.

Is this cool patch meant to be ironic, or is someone serious?

If I may, it's very much supposed to be ironic or tongue in cheek as it where (note the fella sniggering there in the photo).

Very often, military folks commission patches for their team, unit, small group, what have you to commemorate their esprit decor, a cool project, or simply a really funny inside joke. It's amazing how easy it is to get patches made, and once done, it's even funnier to wear and see if anybody notices. Technically, at least in the US forces, you're not allowed to wear "unauthorized patches" which makes the fun of wearing such home-brew versions much the funnier.
